Mabel E. Olson
Mabel E. Olson age 90 formerly of Norwalk, WI passed away Sunday September 28, 2014 in the company of family at Harmony Assisted Living in Stevens Point.
A gathering to celebrate Mabel's life will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 PM on Saturday October 4, 2014 in the Tee Room at the Stevens Point Country Club. A memorial service will be held on Monday October 13, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the Immanuel Methodist Church in Norwalk, with Pastor Theresa Amberson officiating.
Mabel was born February 19, 1924 in Norwalk, the daughter of William and Mabel Caroline (Dreps) Vieth. She graduated from Norwalk High School. Mabel married Theodore "Ted" Olson of Navarino, WI on June 21, 1944. Mabel moved to Chicago during World War II, where she worked at the Dairy Products Association. Ted served with the Army in Europe, and on his return was transferred to Tacoma, WA where Mabel joined him. In 1946 they returned to Norwalk and operated the Norwalk Mercantile, later the Norwalk IGA, which they owned for 25 years. In 1961 they also opened a laundromat in Norwalk and later an additional one in Cashton, WI. Mabel then became a nurse's aide at the Tomah V.A. Medical Center for 15 years, retiring in 1989. She moved to Stevens Point in 2010.
Mabel enjoyed spending time and cooking for family and friends. She always added a lot of love to each menu item she prepared! Mabel loved to travel and also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and reading. She also enjoyed volunteering and giving to others.
Mabel is survived by her children, Donald (Judi) Olson, Stevens Point; Susan (Carl) Kjer, West Allis; Lois (Gregg) Taragos, Minneapolis, MN. Granddaughter, Emily Kjer, West Allis, WI. Sister-in-law: Joan Vieth, Mauston. 3 nephews: Bill (Mara) Vieth, St Paul, Mn and John Vieth, Mauston, and Bill (Judy) Olson, Neenah. Her niece Sandy (Dennis) Pedersen, Neenah. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ted in 1981; her brother, Roland Vieth, brother-in-law, Lemuel Olson and sister-in-law, Betty Olson.
Mabel's family wishes to extend a thank you to the staffs at St. Michaels Hospital, Ministry Hospice, and Harmony Assisted Living for the care and comfort they provided. Also thanks to Pastor Howard Hintzman and members of St. Paul's United Methodist Church for their visits to Mabel, and to all of Mabel's friends and neighbors in Stevens Point and Norwalk for their prayers, cards, calls, and visits.
