Obituary for Carl A. Carlson

Carl A. Carlson
Carl A. Carlson, age 75, lifelong resident of Stevens Point, passed away Wednesday, October 5, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, after a short illness. His wife and children were at his side. He will be deeply missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Stevens Point. The Reverend Rex Zimmerman will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Stephen Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, October 10, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the SentryWorld Atrium (601 Michigan Avenue North) and again on Tuesday, October 11, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at St. Stephen Church.

Carl was born November 24, 1940, to Helge and Antoinette (Miller) Carlson. After attending local elementary schools, he graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1959. He received his Bachelor of Science from Spencerian Business College in Milwaukee (now part of Concordia University) in 1964. After graduation, he began work at Ellis Stone Construction Company, under the company founders, his father Helge and Nils Anderson. For more than 35 years, Carl and his partner James E. Anderson, led Ellis Stone Construction, making it one of the most respected general contracting firms in the area. Carl retired from the business as president in 2006.

On June 27, 1964, Carl married Judith Ann Stout of Wisconsin Rapids. They settled in Stevens Point and raised their three children in their home on the Wisconsin River.

Carl was very active in the community and belonged to a number of organizations. He served as a longtime board member for the Stevens Point Area YMCA and Operation Bootstrap. Carl was a National Life Director of the Association of General Contractors of America and a longtime Executive Committee Member for AGC’s Wisconsin chapter, serving as President in 1986.

Carl was an avid skier, golfer, hunter, and fisherman. He enjoyed travel, especially skiing trips with his family and hunting and fishing trips with friends. Carl was a loyal Packer fan from childhood and a member of the Pointer Basketball Backcourt Club. He was an enthusiastic member of the Eske Lodge Social Club. He most enjoyed time with his family, including a trip to Florida this past spring with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Carl is survived by his wife, Judith, and his children and grandchildren: Kristin and her son, James Keyser; Kathryn (Katie); and Erik, his wife Autumn (Shanklin), and their daughters, Elsa and Ingrid. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Derek (Dorie) Carlson of De Pere, Wisconsin. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Sonja Carlson.

The Carlson family would like to thank the doctors and staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital for the excellent care and support provided to Carl and his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Carl & Judith Carlson Chancellor’s Advancement Endowment at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the Stevens Point Area YMCA, and Operation Bootstrap.
