Obituary for George Galloway

George Galloway, 93, died June 12, 2018 in Eau Claire, WI.
Funeral services for George will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday June 19 at Greater Point Baptist Church: 4901 Cty Road HH Stevens Point. Full military honors and interment at St Joseph’s Cemetery, Stevens Point will follow the service. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until the time of services Tuesday at the church.

George was born on September 8, 1924 in Stevens Point and proved resilient at a young age overcoming rheumatic fever and being primarily self-educated after the 8th grade. George married Irene Galloway (Groshek), his wife of 58 years, and had three sons George Jr, Gerald, and Andrew, supporting his family through love and loss, in Stevens Point. George served in the Army during WWII, stormed Omaha Beach in Normandy, and was awarded a Purple Heart for his sacrifice during battle.

In Stevens Point, George worked in the Pulp and Paper Industry, retiring from Georgia-Pacific after 35 years. Post retirement, George enjoyed time with Irene, his sons, family, grandchildren, great grandchildren and continued hobbies of reading, watching sports, golfing, fishing, playing cards, and driving his Cadillac.

After Irene’s passing, George relocated to Eau Claire, spending more time with family and continuing hobbies. Late in life he built a beautiful friendship with Ruth Robertson as they provided mutual support and companionship until his passing.

We will lovingly remember George, Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa for his courage, empathy, sense of humor, quirks, sharp attire, save-first mentality and support. He was a great man and will be missed.

George is survived by his sisters; Florence (Yvon), Ida Mae, and Rochelle; sons Gerald and Andrew; and their families including nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Irene in 2001, their son George Jr in 1960, four brothers and one sister.
