Obituary for Ellen Andrews

Ellen Andrews
Ellen Andrews, age 86, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, November 7, 2018 in her home surrounded by her loving family. Ellen joins her husband Oliver, an infant son Mark, five brothers, and one sister. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, at Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church, 600 Wilshire Blvd, Stevens Point. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 9:00 AM Saturday morning until the time of services at the church. Shuda Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Ellen was born and grew up on a dairy farm in Portage County and graduated from Waupaca High School. She was the youngest daughter of James and Bertha (Darrow) Green. On June 9, 1951 she married Oliver Andrews and they finally settled and raised their family of five surviving children in Stevens Point. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Matthew 11:28-30 quotes Jesus saying: “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Like all human lives, Ellen experienced many challenges, but she learned the life skill of coming to God and taking on a lighter yoke so that everyone she met saw in her a quiet and gentle and humble heart. In addition, she deeply admired creation and loved to notice birds and flowers. For her work outside her family, she spent 23 years as a Kindergarten teacher’s aid at Washington Elementary School. In early retirement, she and Ollie enjoyed Elderhostel programs, learning and traveling throughout the U.S. These years were followed by more challenging times of caring for Ollie as Parkinson’s Disease diminished his ability to care for himself. After Ollie’s passing, Ellen enjoyed nearly 3 healthy years. During her last weeks on earth, she was cared for by her family in her home assisted with amazing support by Ministry Hospice Home Care.

Ellen’s surviving children are Jeffrey Andrews, Gregory Andrews, Beverly Buechner, Nancy Dow, and Shirley Andrews-Sharer. 14 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren with another due in January. She wanted her family to remember, in the words of Norman Vincent Peale, that “The secret of life isn’t what happens to you, but what you do with what happens to you.”
