August M. "Augie" Bemke
August "Augie" Bemke, age 84, formerly of the Town of Hull, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening November 7, 2018 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. Augie has been residing in King for the past four years.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Augie will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday November 10, 2018 at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Hull. Rev Arul Joseph V. will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends and family will gather to share memories from 4:00 - 7:00 PM on Friday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel: 3200 Stanley St. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to your local Alzheimer's research center.
Augie was born July 18, 1934 in Stevens Point, the son of August and Doris (Gierzewski) Bemke. He graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School. Augie entered the United States Army on February 23, 1955 in Milwaukee. He served his country as a PFC and was a decorated marksman, Augie earned a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged December 30, 1956 from Ft. Sheridan, IL. Augie returned to the area and married June Strike on May 17, 1958 at St. Peters Catholic Church. The couple settled in Stevens Point and raised their family. Augie worked at Worzalla Publishing until his retirement in 2000.
He enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, polka music, puzzles, was an avid Packer, Brewer, Marquette Eagle Basketball, and Badger fan. He made friends wherever he went, had a great sense of humor, enjoyed church picnics, and was an avid softball player for a good part of his life.
Augie is survived by his three children: Jacqueline Lear, Mayfield, KY; Michael Bemke, Stevens Point; Mary (Ron) Grawey, Stevens Point. His son-in-law Brian Paque, Stevens Point. Augie loved all of his seven grandchildren: Laken and Logan Lear; Dr. Ryan (Liz) Bemke; Mariah Bemke, Alyssa, Hailey, and Dillon Grawey. He is also survived by three brothers: Anthony (Rita), Stevens Point; Edward (Diane), Milwaukee; and Walter (Judy) Stevens Point. Four sisters: Catherine Wanta, Stevens Point; Theresa (Arvid) Cummings, Hendrickson, NV; Frances (Richard) Brown, Plover; Eleanor (Gordon) Spitzenberger, Eau Claire. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife June in 2005, their daughter Julie in 2007, and four sisters.
