Leonard F. Herman
Leonard F. Herman, age 87, of Stevens Point passed away peacefully at Maple Ridge Memory Care on Friday November 23, 2018 under the care of the staff and Ascension Hospice after a long battle with Dementia.

A Mass of a Christian Burial for Leonard will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday December 1, 2018 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel – Fancher – 3995 Co Rd K, Amherst, WI. Rev. Edward Shuttleworth will officiate. Friends and family may gather to share memories from 4-6:30 PM on Friday November 30, 2018 at the Shuda Funeral Chapel – 3200 Stanley St, Stevens Point. A general rosary will be prayed at 6:30 PM on Friday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 10-10:45 AM at the church. Burial with full Military Honors will be at the parish cemetery. Shuda Funeral Services will be assisting the family.

Leonard was born in Stevens Point on January 23, 1931, the son of Peter and Elizabeth (Shulfer) Herman. He was orphaned at the age of 4 years and lived with his Uncle Dominick and Aunt Tillie Mansavage. He attended Catholic grade school in Green Bay, finishing 9th grade at the High School. He then lived and worked on the Mansavage farm in Stockton until he joined the Army in January of 1951 where he earned his GED and studied all courses they offered. He was Honorably discharged in January of 1954 with the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He worked in St. Paul, MN briefly after leaving the army. He returned to Stevens Point and worked for a heating and plumbing company.

He met Freda in Sarles ND while traveling with his army friend Buddy, Freda’s cousin. They were married on November 26, 1955 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Stevens Point. In April of 1956 he bought a 140 acre dairy farm which he worked with Freda until 1969 when he bought R-J Vending Services with his brother-in-law, Lloyd Lorbeck. While running the business he also continued to plant crops and raise beef cattle. He sold the farm in 1992 and built a home across the road. He retired in 1997.

Leonard enjoyed farming, non-fiction reading, investing and the study of sciences and politics. In his retired years, he enjoyed going to the bars with Freda and visiting with their many friends and neighbors.

Leonard is survived by 4 daughters: Leah (Ken) Lepinski, Stevens Point; Diane (Mike) Matysik, Rosholt; Beth (Paul) Nellessen, Stevens Point; and Sara (John) De Nucci, Fernandina Beach, FL; brother: Anton (Pat) Bronk, 11 grandchildren: Jocelyn (Daisy) Quintal-Lepinski, Justin (Kathryn) Lepinski, Jordan (Kaylee Wierzba) Matysik, Jaime (Jared) Hintz, Antonio De Nucci, Eva De Nucci, Kyla (Erik AndriusCrots) Pliskie, Alyk Pliskie, Abigail Nellessen, Elizabeth Nellessen, and Rebecca Nellessen, and 6 great grandchildren: Lane, Keaton, Max, Alice, Marley, and Emma.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Freda, daughter Nancy (Ken Pliskie), 5 infant siblings, and 2 sisters Caroline and Germaine.

The family would like to thank the staff of Maple Ridge Memory Care for the wonderful care they have provided over the last three years. They would also like to thank Ascension Hospice who since August, allowed him to remain with the only home and family he was familiar with in recent years and die peacefully.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.
